Sunset Reflections in Alvord Desert Playa Lake
Sunset Reflections in Alvord Desert Playa LakeThe Alvord desert, located east of the Steen Mountains in eastern Oregon, was once a lake extending over 100 miles. Now this playa (dry) lake only contains water sporadically after the Spring rains. Since the average annual rainfall is only around 7 inches, the lake only contains water very briefly each year and the depth is very shallow. Capturing the rare moment when this lake is full of water is truly special. This desolate, arid landscape transforms into a sea of tranquil beauty extending as far a the eye can see.Knowing that the lake would soon dry up and not refill again for another year, I couldn’t help but feel a particular appreciation for this beautiful sunset. I know that it’s too easy to take a place or a moment for granted. But the Earth is a dynamic place. Sometimes you can’t just come back again tomorrow or next week to get a photo. I’m reminded to take advantage of every second and not waste any precious opportunities. For that reason I really appreciate the time-sensitive nature of places like the Alvord desert.
